Background / History of the Choir

Chesterfield Male voice Choir was formed in October 1922 following a meeting at Chesterfield Market Hall.  The Choir started with a few members but within 6 Months the membership had risen to over 60.  The first Musical Director was Mr Laurie Hartley and their introductory concert was performed at Chesterfield Market Hall on March 14th 1923.

Over the years the Choir has taken part in numerous Music festivals and Choir competitions as well as singing at the Royal Albert Hall as part of a One Thousand Male Voice Choir event.  The Choir has also sang at Cardiff Arms Park at a massed Choir Function (see you tube - type in male voice choir Jacobs Ladder).  The Choir has been a part of the

cultural life of Chesterfield for over 87 years.

We frequently sing at Weddings, Funerals and fundraising functions.  Recently £1,000 was raised at a concert for Ashgate Hospice.  For a donation the Choir will sing at weddings both along with the hymns and whilst the couple sign the register.  The happy couple can hear their songs being performed before the big day by attending a choir practice session (by arrangement).

At present the Choir sings under the leadership of Rita Butler who is the Musical Director.  She is constantlly striving to increase the membership, introduce new songs to the repetoir and to keep the old favourites to the fore.

New members are always welcome.  We rehearse Tuesday evenings at 7.30pm at St. Leonards Church, Valley Road, Spital, Chesterfield, just come along.  For further details see contacts page.
